Thank you for participating in our wellness initiaive: Hoopn' for Hearts. Through sport, we are on a mission for the early detection, and subsequent control of hypertension.
A quick blood pressure screen is required to participate. This simple screen is administered BEFORE a participant is allowed to compete. We want to make certain a player/coach is not unknowingly hypertensive. The screen must be under 140/90.
About Hoopn' for Hearts
The importance of early detection
Prior to this current 4v4 tournament, Hoopn' for Hearts operated a weekly basketball league. Our path to controlling high blood pressure came through participation in the American Heart Association and YMCA’s Evidence Based Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program (“BPSM”).
Players agreed to be screened prior to league play. A prior diagnosis coupled with a current hypertensive measurement activated a 4 month arrangement of home self-monitoring, using proper measuring techniques, individualized support and nutrition education. An enrollee in BPSM would be assigned a YMCA Healthy Heart trained Ambassador. The participant is trained and asked to:

Properly measure and record their blood pressure at least two times per month with a take home monitor

Attend two personalized consultations per month

Attend monthly Nutrition Education Seminars

Particpation in Hoopn' for Hearts
This August 8-10, 2025 4v4 tournament will be held at Saint Louis University, in the Simon Recreation Center, located at 3639 Laclede Ave. St. Louis, MO 63108.
Saint Louis University School of Medicine will coordinate the screening and providing education on the dangers of undetected hypertension.
